Ten- to twelve-year survivorship of posterior stabilized modular total knee replacements with cemented and press-fit femoral components

We studied a one-surgeon series of 183 total knee arthroplasties in 171 patients using posterior stabilized modular implants with cemented (49%) or hybrid (51%) fixation. At 10.7–12.7 years postop, nine (2 cemented, 7 hybrid) have been revised for femoral loosening with osteolysis, and eight (4 each) have had isolated polyethelene (PE) revision. PE wear was implicated in every failure. Femoral osteolysis was more pronounced in press-fit cases, but fixation method did not appear to affect overall survivorship. Youth was associated with revision. Early insert revision is advised when clinical and radiographic signs of PE wear are evident.
