Mandated Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis—Possible Adverse Outcomes

JCAHO, CMS, and many pay-for-performance programs track performance on 3 current SCIP measures: antibiotic selection, antibiotic timing, and discontinuation of antibiotics after surgery. An academic medical center introduced comprehensive venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis guidelines in late 2005 that mirrored the SCIP guidelines introduced in 2006. Starting in early 2006, there was anecdotal evidence about possible adverse outcomes of mandatory VTE prophylaxis for hip and knee arthroplasty patients.
