Primary and revision, total hip and knee arthroplasties are common procedures performed by both general and subspecialty trained orthopedic surgeons in the United States. A significant percentage of the joint arthroplasty patient population is known to have diabetes mellitus (DM), and early research has suggested these patients carry a higher risk of complications after arthroplasty, representing a challenge to physicians and hospitals. The purpose of the present study was to explore a large national database to determine if patients with DM do indeed have increases in perioperative complications after primary and revision total joint arthroplasty.
