Pathomorphological Findings and Prearthrotic Deformities Predicting Osteoarthrosis of the Hip Joint

Abnormal morphology of the hip has been associated with primary osteoarthrosis. We evaluated 466 hips contralateral to hips treated by total hip arthroplasty. Hips with secondary osteoarthritis were excluded, as were hips with advanced arthrosis to eliminate the effect of arthritic remodeling. One hundred nineteen hips remained—25 in patients 60 years or older with Tönnis 0 or 1 and 94 hips with Tönnis 2 arthrosis. We quantified morphological parameters on plain radiographs and computed tomographic images and simulated range of motion using virtual bone models from the computed tomographic data.
