The annual number of lower extremity total joint procedures is expected to double by the year 2026 for total hip arthroplasty (THA) and by 2016 for total knee arthroplasty (TKA), reaching 572000 primary THA and 3.48 million primary TKA by 2030. The annual number of revision THA (97000 by 2030 [137% increase]) and revision TKA (268000 by 2030 [601% increase]) are also increasing drastically. The average hospital Medicare payment for DRGs 209 and 544 increased 24% between 1991 and 2007. The average physician payment for total joint arthroplasty (TJA) declined 39% in the same interval.
