Metal-on-metal (M-M) bearing surfaces have been proposed as an alternative to conventional metal-on-polyethylene (M-PE) articulations in total hip arthroplasty (THA) as a means of reducing wear and subsequent implant loosening. This study was performed to investigate the hypothesis that M-M bearings reduce the risk of component loosening when compared with M-PE bearings.
