The advent of total hip arthroplasty as conceived and executed by Sir John Charnley in the 1960s marked a revolution in the management of end-stage arthritis of the hip. As evidenced by the recent publication of books devoted to the surgical management of hip arthritis, a considerable body of experience and knowledge has accumulated in this area.
