Minimally-invasive surgical (MIS) techniques are being used in total knee arthroplasty. MIS techniques incorporate shorter incisions, smaller instruments, and a quadriceps sparing approach. A number of studies have shown shorter hospital stays and increased range of motion compared to the medial parapatellar approach. However, concern has been raised about the introduction of a new technique that may compromise visualization and result in operative complications. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is any benefit to the MIS technique over the standard technique if a quadriceps-sparing approach is used for both.
